What are Bioidentical Hormones?

Bioidentical hormones are compounds that have exactly the same chemical and molecular structure as hormones that are produced in the human body.

Numerous studies have been done attesting to the safety of natural hormones for men and women. The natural hormones are almost entirely without the side effects of the synthetic hormone replacement drugs.

Depending on your symtoms and test results, you may be prescribed the bioidentical hormones estrogen, progesterone, thyroid, DHEA, cortisol or melatonin.

Why should you use bioidentical hormones?

Bioidentical hormones have been successfully used by men and women for decades. In well known medical journals, researchers have reported that the bioidentical hormones, estrogen and testosterone, are not only safe but also have a positive impact on some diseases like osteoporosis and prostate cancer.

Why should women & men replace their hormones?

As women and men age, their hormones decline. This decline creates hormonal imbalances which cause negative side effects. For women, they may suffer from hot flashes, weight gain, night sweats, fatigue, loss of libido and much more.

Although a man's loss of hormones are less obvious, he is still losing them. Testosterone loss will show itself through symptoms such as low energy, loss of muscle mass, a slower metabolism resulting in weight gain and decreased strength in erections.

When should I consider Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Don’t wait if you are experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance. In general, hormones begin to decline after the mid-20s and hormone imbalance symptoms are frequently present by the mid-30s. A good time to start replacing hormones is between 35 and 40.

What are (BHRT) bioidentical hormone pellets?

Hormone pellets consist of the natural hormones estrogen and testosterone, which are derived from natural plant based ingredients. They are not synthetics or alien to our body. They are made by a compounding pharmacy and the pellet itself is smaller than a grain of rice. These hormones are then time released and constantly available for the body to use as needed.

How often do I require Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Pellets?

The bioidentical hormone replacement treatment normally lasts four to six months. Sequential pellet treatments are based on the patients needed hormone chemicals levels.

How long before Hormone Pellets start to work?

Hormone pellets usually effect patients in 3 - 7 days.

What are the possible side effects of Bioidentical Hormone Replacement?

Due to bioidentical hormones being identical to what the body naturally produces, there are relatively few side effects. Side effects usually occur due to a hormone dosage being too high. Dr. Lucey evaluates his patients closely through blood test to assure they have balanced hormones.

Why don’t more Doctors suggest Bioidentical Hormones?

Most doctors in the past trained using synthetic hormones and, therefore, are more comfortable in prescribing them. In addition, many doctors are unaware of these natural bioidentical hormones. Since natural hormones cannot be patented, manufacturers lack the financial incentive to fund research and development to market these substances, and doctors receive little information on bio-identical androgens, estrogens and progesterones.

How will Bioidentical Hormones help me?

Bioidentical hormones will:

  • Enhance the quality of your life
  • Increase mental sharpness
  • Enhance muscle tone
  • Restore sense of wellbeing
  • Diminish mood swings
  • Restore libido
  • Improve energy levels
And much more...

How are Bioidentical Hormones Compounded?

Each Bioidentical Hormone  prescription is compounded individually to meet the specific needs of each man or woman. Hormone pellet prescriptions are based on results of laboratory testing and symptoms and are adjusted as necessary until hormones are completely balanced until all of your symptoms disappear.

Why do Women need Estrogen?

Women need estrogen to enhance the quality of their life and remain healthy enough to enjoy it to the maximum.

I heard that Estrogen may increase my risk for a heart attack or breast cancer. Is this true?

Alarmist newspapers have frightened many women from taking hormones their bodies made naturally all of their reproductive lives. The press screamed a 26% increase in breast cancer risk in the Women’s Health Initiative study. What they did not say was that of 10,000 women taking Prempro, only eight more would develop breast cancer and only seven more would have heart attacks. Women, however, are no longer willing to accept any unnecessary risks nor should they.

Today, women prefer natural hormones. When the appropriate medical history, physical examination and laboratory testing are obtained, bio-identical hormone replacement therapy is the most appropriate form of HRT.

Will hormone replacement cure my menstrual migraines?

About 60 to 70% of migraine sufferers have had headaches triggered by menses. It has been known since the 1970s that falling estrogen levels could trigger migraines, especially when combined with other triggers. Most migraine sufferers are aware of the usual triggers such as cheese, red wine, MSG, chocolate and caffeine, but the estrogen trigger is still overlooked even though it can be easily treated.

Do Natural Hormones Require a Prescription?

Yes. Compounding pharmacists work together with patients and physicians to provide customized  bioidentical hormone replacement therapy pellets in the most appropriate strength and dosage to meet each individual’s specific hormone replacement needs.

Will My Insurance Cover BHRT?

Insuruance will usually  cover your blood work. However, they don't cover the consultation and pellet procedure. The consultation and pellet procedure will usually fall within $300 to $600 dollars depending on your hormone levels. If you require only a few pellets, than your cost will be less.
